WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF MEZUZAH?

In the Holy bible, the Mezuzah has a mention in Deuteronomy 6:9, 11:20, “And you shall inscribe them on the doorposts (mezuzot) of our house and on your gates”. This is the reason why the Mezuzah has received such a wide acceptance by a lot of people. This is also a reminder that you should adhere to all the commandments and the rules set by the traditions which are holy. Every single time that you enter or leave your home, seeing the Mezuzah will remind you that you have an affiliation with God and you must follow his practices.

WHERE TO HANG THE MEZUZAH?

It is advised that a Mezuzah must be put up right on the doorstep of every living room. Many consider that only hanging a Mezuzah on the entrance door is enough but Jews also need to have a Mezuzah at every doorstep where they live. In Jewish culture, every room that consists of two or more doorsteps and also an overhead lintel must have a Mezuzah. Thus, one should check with their rabbi before moving to a new home whether how many Mezuzahs are needed and where exactly one should hang them. Various parts of the room such as the bathroom, closets, laundry rooms as well as boiler rooms do not require a Mezuzah at their doorsteps.

WHEN TO HANG THE MEZUZAH?

It is highly recommended by those who follow Jewish practices that one should put up the Mezuzah as soon as they move in to a new home. If not, they must make all efforts to put it on their doorstep within 30 days of moving to a new place. If you are staying in a place on a temporary basis, which counts as less than 30 days, you need not put up a Mezuzah. Even a place of business or any kind of offices do not require a Mezuzah. Students who live in a hostel or a dormitory room must hang a Mezuzah at the doorstep as it is just like a second home for the student. However, in the country Israel the rule where you need to hang a Mezuzah within 30 days does not apply and one shall do it as soon as they move in.
